ENGAGE Project enhances collaborative efforts for Marine Conservation in the South Adriatic Ionian Area
Overview

The ENGAGE project recently held significant events aimed at enhancing the protection of nature and biodiversity in the South Adriatic Ionian Strait Ecologically or Biologically significant Area. These events included a cross-border training session and a workshop, both of which emphasized the importance of marine conservation and cross-border collaboration.

The three-day training event, organized by the Albanian Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development (ACEPSD) from May 7th to 9th, 2024, in Tirana, Albania, focused on building the capacities of key experts and stakeholders. Participants from Albania, Italy, and Montenegro—including representatives from various ministries, agencies, research institutes, and universities—engaged in comprehensive sessions designed to improve their skills and knowledge in Marine Protected Areas management. Topics covered ranged from the historical aspects of marine areas, climate change adaptation, and marine organism health, to the management of non-native species and fisheries. The event concluded with the distribution of participation certificates, underscoring the commitment to continued education and collaboration in marine conservation.

Concurrently, the first workshop on the EUSAIR Strategy was held on May 10th, 2024, also in Tirana, Albania, organized by ACEPSD. This workshop aimed to gather recommendations from decision-makers and key stakeholders to preserve the ecological integrity of the South Adriatic Ionian Strait. The event featured discussions on the threats to conservation, risks to protected areas, and opportunities for cross-border collaboration. Experts from Albania, Montenegro, and Italy shared their insights and best practices, contributing to the development of a Joint Action Plan and a Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed by stakeholders from various sectors.

These events highlight the collaborative efforts and shared commitment to protecting the South Adriatic Ionian Strait's marine environment. The active participation and exchange of knowledge among stakeholders and experts are crucial steps toward achieving sustainable marine conservation in the region.
