Cross Water+ discusses in Montenegro the Water Sector Development and its Impact on Biodiversity
Overview

Regional Waterworks for the Montenegrin Coast organizes in Montenegro the workshop: Water Sector Development and its Impact on Biodiversity.

The workshop shall take place on October 3rd, 2024, from 09:00 to 16:45, in Hotel “Kingspark”, Podgorica, Montenegro.

The workshop aims to bring together professionals and partnership representatives under the project Cross Water+ from Italy, Albania and Montenegro, including the representatives of Montenegrin institutions to put the lights on the key topics related to the water resources and protection of the environment in terms of Cross Water project achievements.

The workshop shall elaborate three thematic units/topics:

 

Topic 1 „Sustainable Water Managemet“, shall focus on joint efforts invested into implementation of  environmentally sustainable projects. Four work groups shall work on many aspects of this topic and shall provide their feedback on following issues: Water management and its impacts on habitats and biodiversity; sources of pollution and their effects on water and ecosystems in affected areas;

impacts of river regulation and dam construction on migration of fish and other water species; investigating relationship between the climate change, water availability and biodiversity;

The topic “Sustainable Water Management” shall highlight the importance of strategic planning and water management in line with the environmental standards. The work groups shall adress the following issues:   Investigating methodologies and practices for efficient use and preservation of the water resources following the demands of communities and preservation of ecosystems; the role of education and raising of awareness of the public about the importance of preservation of water ecosystems and biodiversity; impacts of construction of the dams, accumulations, irrigation systems and other infrastructure on environment; costs and benefits from investment made in water resources including the economic and ecological values of water ecosystems; models of the joint water source management and the ways the local communities may assume active role in preservation and protection of water quality.

 

Topic 2 “Industrial and economic developments in the area of the sanitary protection zones" .The participants shall gain insight into this topic through analysis of impacts of the developed water sector on the local economy and industry. The following questions shall be discussed under this workshop: Achieving balance between the development of economy and protection of water source;  legislation related to the protection of water springs and in what ways it may impact the industrial and economy development;  development of new technologies that may enhance protection of water springs and foster the sustainable development of economy;  role of the local communities, state institutions and private sector in joint water spring management in the sanitary protection zones;

The workshop shall be attended by the partners of the Regional Waterworks, the representatives of organisations in charge of water resources and environmental protection, including university professors and representatives of the competent ministries.  The partnership representatives from Italy and Albania shall share their experience and best practices within the scope of water sector in terms of impacts of the sector on biodiversity.

The workshop aims to enhance the exchange of knowledge and experience and to further strengthen the cooperation between the participants. The results of discussions shall be used for promotion of the water sector development and its impact on biodiversity with the accent on sustainability and environmental protection.
