Interreg SURF discusses in Tirana the innovative urban food policies in the South Adriatic area
Overview

The Municipality of Tirana organizes on 10 December 2024 (Hotel Doro City, Tirana, Albania )a workshop, “Stakeholder Collaboration and Engagement on Food Policy”, aimed to enhance food policies and strengthening the agri-food system in the Tirana region. The initiative is part of SURF project, South Adriatic Urban Food Strategy, a cooperation project funded by Interreg IPA South Adriatic with the aim to increase the institutional capacities of medium and small sized cities in South Adriatic area to favour the uptake of food system strategies and urban food policies by adopting joint and participatory decision-making processes.

This event will bring together experts, policymakers, and local stakeholders to discuss innovative approaches and solutions to food-related challenges while fostering collaboration for sustainable development.

The workshop will use the Living Lab methodology, enabling participants to actively contribute to the improvement of the Municipality of Tirana’s Food Programme Policy Paper.

The main discussion topics will be:

  • Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture: Exploring opportunities to ensure healthy, certified organic food production.
  • Tirana’s Food Identity: Highlighting unique local plants and foods, with a focus on creating marketable food-related brands.
  • Farmers’ Markets and Short Supply Chains: Promoting their benefits and identifying strategies to increase their impact.
  • Innovation and Sustainability in Agri-Food Systems: Leveraging research and EU-funded initiatives to enhance sustainability.
  • Food Waste Management: Addressing food waste through redistribution policies and supporting surplus food reallocation to families in need.
  • Establishment of a Tirana Food Council: Proposing a dedicated council to institutionalize food policies and tackle food-related challenges effectively.

The event will conclude with a summary of key ideas, actionable steps, and future priorities to advance Tirana’s Food Programme and foster meaningful collaboration among stakeholders.

The project, lead by the Municipality of Tirana (Albania), has 3 Italian partners: the Mediterannean Agronomic Institute of Bari (Italy), the Municipality of Caprarica (Italy) and the Municipality of Campobasso and one Montenegrin Partner, the Municipality of Ulcinj (Montenegro).
